hypnosis can replace anesthesiaMost people are unaware that hypnosis can replace anesthesia for minor and major surgery. That is good news for those who are resistant to anesthesia and for those who prefer to use little or no anesthesia. What many folks and a lot of medical doctors do not know is that hypnosis has been approved by the American Medical Association (AMA) since the 1940′s.

Hypnosis Can Replace Anesthesia

A New Zealand psychiatrist said that hypnosis could be used more widely for pain relief and surgical anesthesia for those who are allergic to anesthesia.  Bob Large, who has been cited by Australia’s ABC, reported that in some parts of the world, (which includes the US), hypnosis has been used prior to major surgery, both with and without anesthesia.

“Some people are capable of very, very impressive anaesthesia and analgesia with hypnosis,” he said.

“There are case reports of people having major surgery under hypnosis going way back.”

In fact, Large noted, there are many advantages to having hypnosis prior to surgery, whether you will also receive anesthesia or not.

“I think in the first instance it helps them feel less apprehensive about the process,” he said.

“And within the procedure itself it doesn’t negate the possibility of using chemical anaesthesia, but it reduces the dosages that are required and that’s pretty useful as well.

“Women who use hypnosis for childbirth are able to be much more comfortable through the whole process, they have a good time, the baby comes out less sedated because you’ve not used as much morphine or other analgesia along the way.”

The is good news on many different fronts. As an example the cost of hypnosis is a lot lower than the cost of the anesthesia and the anesthesiologist. The well being of the patient is better served with hypnosis. Recover time can usually be speed up using hypnosis.

So if you know anyone who is resistant to the every day surgery business as usual you might want to let them know hypnosis can replace anesthesia in many cases and at the very least it can increase the need for less anesthesia and improve the patients pre and post surgical experience.

  1. Thanks for sharing this information. I’m a certified hypnotherapist and think hypnosis can be extremely powerful. While I’m not sure I have the skill to go deeply enough to undergo surgery utilizing only hypnosis, I used it quite effectively to control the pain of having a 2 1/2″ ring-shank nail shot through my finger on a construction project I was working on, and I use it for headaches, as well. I think hypnosis is greatly underutilized.
